Heavy Menstrual bleeding, also known as menorhagia by the medical professionals can be defined as a loss of more than 80-120 ml of menstrual blood loss during one menstrual cycle. In simple terms, this is the estimated quantity of blood that causes anaemia – blood deficiency- when lost during menstruation. But such simplistic view is actually counterproductive for two reasons. Heavy menstrual bleeding is a highly subjective and personal issue. Secondly, this definition requires actually measuring the blood loss, which isn’t very convenient for most of the women suffering from the condition.  A more practical definition of the condition is the soaking of a pad in an hour or less during every menstrual cycle.

Though heavy menstrual bleeding may appear to occur along with some tissue changes in the uterus, such changes may not always be the cause of the heavy bleeding. For instance, uterine fibroids are one of the commonly occurring pathologies. Several studies have been conducted to assess the association of heavy menstrual bleeding with it but conclusive evidence is yet awaited. Age is another factor that has been studied to establish a pattern between heavy bleeding with a variable with some confirmative results. Some blood disorders, however, are found to be related with heavy blood loss. Endometriosis is the presence of the uterus lining tissue in the muscular layer of the uterus. This most commonly leads to painful menstruation. However, studies have shown some association of heavy menstrual bleeding with endometriosis. Ethnic, cultural and racial groups are thought to be indifferent as being the related to heavy menstrual bleeding.  Psychological well being is something that is shown to be related to alteration in the regular menstrual cycles.
